Assistive Technology

University Accessibility Center (UAC) has technical equipment available to assist students with disabilities in obtaining access to university programs, information, and services. The UAC computer lab, located in the Lee Library, has ten computer workstations equipped with special assistive software and devices. Students can access this equipment by obtaining clearance from their UAC advisor and receiving basic training on the equipment at the lab.

Assistive Software

  • JAWS for Windows: Jaws is a remarkable program that will dictate text displayed on a computer screen so students who have trouble reading text from a computer screen can listen to it instead.
  • Magic: This program are very helpful for students who have visual impairements. By magnifying the computer screen they make normally small text (like this) appear much larger and easier to read (like this).
  • Kurzweil -  1000/3000: With the use of a scanner, these programs can recognize scanned text from a book or other printed material and read it back to the user. Kurzweil are very helpful for visually impaired and/or learning impaired students.
  • Duxbury Braille Translator: This program can translate from normal text on a computer screen to braille text (or vice versa). Braille text can be printed using the braille embosser (printer).
  • Dragon NaturallySpeaking: Dragon speach recognition software aids students with difficulty typing on computer keyboards. Sentences and phrases spoken into a microphone are transformed into text and can be edited by voice commands. Text can also be dictated back to the student by the comptuer.
