— Are all of my classrooms accessible to me? Generally speaking, all classrooms are accessible on campus. If there is concern whether a classroom is accessible, contact University Accessibility Center (UAC) at 422-2767. Furthermore, if there is a required course held in a classroom that is not accessible, call UAC as soon as possible and every effort will be made to move the class to an accessible location. We recommend that wheelchair-users not schedule classes in the Maeser Building without first checking to see if accommodations in that building fulfill individual needs. — Will I be able to get from class to class on campus without being late? Not always; therefore, it is necessary to schedule classes that are in close proximity to each other. Either examine the map at the end of the course schedule book, or call UAC for recommendations. If you are unable to navigate long flights of stairs, do not schedule classes back to back that make you travel from upper to lower campusCyou probably will be late to your next class. — How can I make sure I get all of the classes I need in the most convenient locations? If you are registered with UAC and have a mobility impairment that necessitates accommodation, priority registration will be made available to you.
ACCESSIBLE ROUTES AROUND CAMPUS Yes, see the map in the back of the fall/winter schedule book; it is a good resource for construction routes. More specific instructions are published by the Wilkinson Center, and University Accessibility Center (UAC) will inform you of any major changes via mail-out flyer. The first and most accessible way is to enter the Tanner building on the fourth floor and take the elevator to the first floor. On the first floor, there is an exit with automatic door openers in the middle of the south side of the building. Exit there and follow the sidewalk over the footbridge onto the second floor of the Richards Building (RB). The RB elevator is located on the north end. Two other routes are paved footpaths. One goes from the sidewalk between the Joseph Smith Building and the Heber J. Grant Building across Campus Drive down to the tennis courts. The other footpath goes down to Helaman Halls. Turn left on the service road and then go left on the footpath down to the RB. The final two routes are long and fairly steep and are not ADA accessible. During inclement weather, especially snow, plan on going through the Tanner Building. BYU has excellent snow removal staff and equipment. Generally the snow is removed from sidewalks as soon as it falls, and the walks are sanded or treated with a snow-melting compound. In the event we experience severe storms and there is an accumulation of snow, do not be afraid to venture out. The main walkways will be plowed. If you are still apprehensive, ask a roommate or ward member for assistance until you are comfortable. If there is no one available, call UAC for volunteer campus travel assistance (which takes at least 24 hours to implement). Also, other students are extremely helpful. If you run into severe problems with snow, call UAC and explain where the problem is. We will contact Grounds and straighten things out. Do not call Grounds yourselfCa call from our office carries more weight. Parking On Campus. Students interested in disability parking must contact the University Traffic Office, and can do so by clicking on the following link: University Traffic Office EMERGENCIES If you are on campus, have someone contact either the University Police at 422-2222 or our office for assistance.
